Activities for academic staff

On June 17, 2024, an online webinar on the topic "Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in the Educational Process" was held for the academic and visiting staff of the university. It was delivered by Giga Khositashvili, an assistant professor of the Faculty of Business, Technology, and Education at Ilia State University. The purpose of the webinar was to introduce the participants to the topics related to the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and address topical questions such as: Where is the line between ethical use of AI and academic misconduct? Why is AI-generated text so hard to detect, and do we even need to detect it? What do the latest scientific research results show?


On May 28, 2024, an online workshop titled "Mentoring and Scientific Work Management" was held for the academic and invited staff of the university. The workshop was led by Ketevan Chomakhashvili, a lawyer, lecturer at Tbilisi Free University, founder of "Success Hub" LLC, and mentor in personal and professional development. The aim of the workshop was to inform the participants about the principles of mentoring and leadership.


On May 1-2, 2024, the Research Support Center held information meetings with the Heads of the Departments of the Faculty of Medicine. The aim of the meeting was to introduce the participants with the methods of scientific journals' selection and stages of publication of scientific articles. The participants of the information meetings got acquainted with the principles of selecting impact-factor scientific journals and identifying "predatory" journals.


From April 8 to May 31, 2024, an online course titled "Quantitative Data Analysis in SPSS" was held for the university's academic and invited staff. The course was led by European University guest lecturer, statistician, and data analyst, Tsvata Berdzenishvili. The aim of the course was to familiarize the participants with the basic methods of data processing and statistical analysis using the SPSS program.


On April 4, 2024, an online workshop "Student Support, Guidance, and Mentoring in Educational and Research Activities" was held for the academic and invited staff of the university. The workshop was led by Kristi Praakle, Head of the Department of Veterinary Biomedicine and Food Hygiene at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, Estonian University of Life Sciences. The purpose of the workshop was to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to help them become successful mentors for students.


On February 19-23, 2024, an online workshop on the topic "Scientific Ethics in Teaching and Research Activities" was held for the academic and visiting staff of the university. The workshop was led by Maya Metreveli, Master of Information Management and Project Manager at Innovative Educational Connections. The purpose of the meeting was to provide the participants with information about the academic integrity policy, academic experience, and prevention methods for academic misconduct in the educational and scientific fields. Additionally, information regarding the use of electronic scientific resources, including the publication of scientific papers and journals, was shared with the participants.


On June 10, 2023, an online workshop "Mentorship and Scientific Leadership" was held for academic and visiting staff of the university, led by Tbilisi Free University lecturer, lawyer, founder of "Success Hub" LLC, personal and professional development mentor Ketevan Chomakhashvili. The purpose of the meeting was to share information regarding mentorship and scientific leadership issues for interested parties. During the workshop, such issues as the definition of mentoring, guiding principles of a mentor, specific skills of a mentor, etc. were discussed.


On July 21-31, 2023, an online workshop "Collaborative Research" was held for academic and visiting staff of the university, which was led by an affiliate assistant professor of the European University, a researcher of the Research Institute of Medicine, researcher of the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Eka Kokhreidze. The workshop discussed issues such as the importance of collaborative research, its types, objectives, etc. In addition, the trainees got acquainted with the main goals and requirements of the calls published by the foundations at the national and international level.


On April 19, 2023, an online workshop "Academic Freedom" was held for academic and visiting staff of the university, led by Iris Kizimoglu, an expert on academic freedom of the European Students Union. Principles of academic freedom and their importance were discussed at the meeting.


From February 16 to March 23, 2023, an online training course "Statistical data processing and analysis in the R environment" was held for the academic and visiting staff, led by David Sichinava, director of CRRC and adjunct research professor at Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada).


On February 2, 2023, an online workshop on "Principles of Open Science" was held for the academic and visiting staff of the European University, which was led by Giga Khositashvili, the deputy director of the library of Ilia State University, guest lecturer of the European University. All participants were given certificates.


In the period of June 23 - July 1, 2022, the online training "Collaborative Research" was held, which was led by Eka Kokhreidze, an affiliate assistant professor of the European University, researcher of the Research Institute of Medicine, researcher of the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases. The duration of the training was 8 hours.


On May 18, 2022, an online training was organized by the Research Support Center and the National Center for Intellectual Property - "Sakpatenti" for the academic and visiting staff of the European University, led by "Sakpatenti" tutors Merab Kutsia (Head of the Invention and New Varieties Department of "Sakpatenti") and Irakli Kasradze (Acting Head of the Legal Department of “Sakpatenti").


On April 29, 2022, the Research Support Center held an information online meeting for the academic and visiting staff of the university on the topic "How to select a scientific journal", where the methods of selecting scientific journals were discussed, as well as the tools and methods for identifying "predatory journals".


On February 23 - March 3, 2022, an online training "Preparation of a grant application and fund-raising" was held, which was led by Salome Kandelaki, project coordinator of the Georgian Policy Institute and visiting lecturer of the European University. During the training, the following issues were discussed: definition of the project and goal and identification of interested parties; recording project activities; creation and budgeting of the logical chain of the project; project sustainability: risk analysis/monitoring and evaluation plan.


On February 18, 2022, a seminar on "Information management while working on a scientific paper" was held, which was led by the guest lecturer of the European University, Giga Khositashvili. The purpose of the training was to familiarize the participants with the general principles of using Mendeley (personal storage for electronic resources; citation and bibliography in automatic mode).


In the period 27 October - 5 November 2021, an online workshop on "Qualitative Research Methods and Research Ethics" was held for the academic and visiting staff of the European University, led by Hiba Masood, Professor of Cardiff Metropolitan University.


On November 28, 2020, an online workshop on "Writing Research Grant Projects" was held for academic and visiting staff and researchers of the European University. The workshop was led by Ilia State University Professor Ketevan Gurchiani. At the workshop, the academic and invited staff were introduced to the specifics of filling out research grant applications and key issues related to the preparation of a research grant project, such as research topic selection, research objective, general research project application structure, academic ethics, and international collaboration.


On December 2-12, 2020, a series of online workshops on "Research at the University" was held for academic and visiting staff and researchers. The training was led by Vladimer Luarsabishvili, Professor of New Vision University. The workshop aimed to develop research skills for academic staff in various fields and to strengthen existing ones. The workshop participants were introduced to the basic methods of modern academic research.


At the end of the 2019-2020 academic year, the Research Support Center conducted an assessment of the scientific-research potential of the members of academic staff and guest lecturers, based on the results of which their research interests were revealed. Based on the stated interests and disciplines, a database of research grant programs and individual research grants has been created; information about the grant programs is systematically provided to the academic staff and guest lecturers.


In the 2019-2020 academic year, the following projects on behalf of the European University were submitted to the Fundamental Research program funded by the Shota Rustaveli Georgian National Science Foundation:

  • Gin and Tail indices and modeling of the economic structure of the Georgian population through Pareto and lognormal distributions (registration code: FR-19-16766)
  • Decriminalization of drug crime in Georgia, comparative analysis and case law (registration code FR-19-029).

In the 2019-2020 academic year, the following project was submitted to the Grant Program for Young Scientists:

International Law on the Principle of Prohibition of the Use or Use of Threats: Theory and Practice on the Example of Georgia” (Registration Code YS-19-502)


On April 19, 2019, the Research Support Center was opened at the European University.

On April 19, 2019, a memorandum was signed between the European University and Ivane Beritashvili Experimental Biomedicine Center. The European University has introduced a document entitled “Procedures and Mechanisms for Detecting, Preventing, and Responding to Plagiarism” aimed at promoting internal responsibility for the effective conduct of scientific and academic activities at the University, establishing high academic standards and establishing standards of conduct. On May 3, 2019,Zviad Gabisonia, Director General of the Shota Rustaveli Georgian National Science Foundation, visited the European University. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the current situation, challenges and future prospects in the field of science as part of the education and science reform.

The Director General presented the planned changes in the field of science to the audience, talked about the new important international projects, initiatives and plans to be implemented this year by the Rustaveli Foundation. On June 15, 2019, the European University held its 5th International Student Scientific Conference at the Bazaleti Hotel Complex. On June 21, 2019, the Faculty of Medicine announced a competition for one-year research grant projects for the affiliate academic staff of the Faculty of Medicine.
