ANDRIA APAKIDZE INSTITUTE OF ARCHEOLOGY

The Institute of Archeology named after the academician Andria Afakidze was founded on June 21, 2017. From June 1, 2020, in order to promote the educational process and scientific-research activities, it operates within European University.

The Institute together with the Historical-Archaeological Museum of European University regularly publishes the scientific-research journal “Archaeology”.

The Andria Apakidze Institute of Archeology of European University carries out the following scientific-research and practical activities:

  • Promotion of archeology
  • Implementation of field archaeological reconnaissance in Georgia and abroad
  • Conducting archaeological excavations in Georgia and abroad
  • Laboratory processing/study/restoration of materials obtained as a result of excavation
  • Providing special archaeological expert conclusions and recommendations
  • Organization of archaeological expositions, exhibitions at the national and international level
  • Invitation of foreign specialists
  • Cooperation with relevant organizations, including foreign institutions
  • Organization of scientific conferences, symposiums, and congresses
  • Producing and distributing relevant scholarly literature, catalogs, periodicals, manuals (including digital ones)
  • Promotion of student internships and increasing students involvement in field practice and archaeological research
  • Involvement of those interested in archeology and field work

Forms of activity of the Institute:

  • Conducting conferences, presentations and various activities
  • Participation in archaeological projects
  • Conducting archaeological research (reconnaissance, excavation works, processing, study and restoration of material obtained as a result of archaeological research)
  • Cooperation with foreign educational and research institutions
  • Publishing a scholarly journal in the field of archeology, both in print and electronic form
  • publishing scientific literature

Prof. Guram Kipiani - archaeologist, architect (head of the Paleo-urban Research Laboratory at Ilia State University)

Prof. Vakhtang Licheli - archaeologist (head of the Institute of Archeology of the Faculty of Humanities at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University)

Prof. Valery Vashakidze - historian (deputy director of the Ivane Javakhishvili Institute of History and Ethnology)

Prof. Dimitri Akhvlediani - archaeologist (professor of the School of Arts and Sciences at Ilia State University)

Prof. Liana Bitadze - anthropologist (chief scientist of the anthropological research laboratory of the Institute of History and Ethnology at Ivane Javakhisvili Tbilisi State University)

Madonna Mshvildadze - guardian of the funds of the European University Historical and Archaeological Museum, editor-in-chief of the research magazine “Archaeology” (specialist in underwater archaeology, invited lecturer at Ilia State University).
