Professional Development Workshop in English Language Teaching at European University
From April 20 to 24, 2026, European University hosted a Professional Development Workshop in English Language Teaching, led by Prof. Dr. John Levis of Iowa State University.
The program was funded by the US State Department under the English Language Specialist Program.
The workshop brought together English language teachers from private and state universities, public and private schools, the British Council, and language centers across the country.
Over four intensive days, the workshop covered topics central to effective oral language instruction.
Sessions explored contemporary TESOL methodology, focusing on oral language instruction and practical applications. Each theoretical session was paired with a practical counterpart offering hands-on strategies for teaching and assessment.
Consultation sessions were also held for PhD students and university academic personnel.
What made this workshop particularly valuable was its sustained focus on pronunciation, listening, and the closely related concepts of communication and intelligibility – areas often underrepresented in teacher training.
Rather than treating pronunciation as an isolated skill, the workshop framed it within the broader goal of meaningful, intelligible communication. All sessions were research-based, providing evidence-driven insights into oral proficiency development.
The workshop also prioritized active engagement, giving attendees opportunities to practice techniques and collaborate through hands-on activities.
Upon completion of the seminars, participants were awarded certificates.
